The Yucaipa Valley Historical Society is dedicated to the indigenous people
who first enjoyed the bounty of this land at the foothills of the San Bernardino
mountains. While those people are no longer with us, their presence is not
forgotten. How well we understand what they, too, knew - This is great place
to live...
Their memory is preserved in the rock implements and grinding areas that
remain today. The Society also remembers the early Spanish and Mexican settlers
who first walked these hills and explored the local resources. They mined
gold and ranched, raising cattle and horses.
The first Americans followed in those footsteps and saw the community for
what it could be. Before long, children were growing up, so they built schools,
the Pass School being the first, and the Society's logo. The Americans discovered
the richness of the earth and channeled the water from the hills. The community
was known as the "Breadbasket of Southern California." They gathered
together during the harvest and raised the money for the first library in
the 1880's.
Life in Yucaipa continued through the 20th century. Today the ranches have
become
housing tracts and we all have new neighbors.
The Yucaipa Valley Historical Society never forgets that life is, indeed,
good here.
Please join us in making the History of the Yucaipa Valley come alive for
the people
now and generations to come.
